Take action

In 2019 and 2020 the project got a new focus: It is now dedicated to the support of local self-organization and empowerment in the context of LGBTIAQ* who experience racism.

At a local level queer BPPoC (Black LGBTIAQ*,  LGBTIAQ* of Color, LGBTIAQ* with refugee- and migration background) have the possibility to realize their own projects, to organize themselves and establish groups in order to create more visibility and strenghten participation.

The support aims at the foundation and the establishment of local groups and their activities from and for LGBTIAQ* of Color. It is required that queer BPoC are actively involved in the planning and realization of the project.

Transregional Networking NRW

Since 2018 North Rhine-Westphalia has an additional Empowerment Group for LGBTIAQ* people with refugee background / of Color of all ages, which meets regularly in safer spaces. The group consists of (activist) people who are networking, who are empowering and learning from each other.

Since 2019 the specialised department #MehrAlsQueer (#MAQ: More than queer) is running empowerment-offers.

The Empowerment-network of #MAQ welcomes all LGBTIAQ* with a refugee or migration background as well as all lgbtiaq* people of Color who want to help foster a self-determined network and support structure in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The organisation of workshops on topics such as empowerment, experiences of racism, self-organisation and working as a group is a part of the work.

Empowerment

LGBTIAQ* with a migration or a refugee background are affected by various dimensions of discrimination (multiple discrimination: racism, (hetero-)sexism, transphobia, etc.) in their everyday lives. This project aims to create a (safer) place for LGBTIAQ* People of Color/refugees, where they can feel protected from discrimination, share their experiences, empower and support each other (powersharing).

Empowerment is understood as a strategy and action concept (practical, theoretical, political), which assumes that the potentials and resources of each individual person are the basis for individual and collective (social) changes.
